Ynghylch wyth diwrnod wedi iddo ddweud hyn, cymerodd Pedr ac Ioan ac Iago gydag ef a mynd i fyny’r mynydd i weddïo. Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him.They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’ – not knowing what he said.While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud.Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

Roedd Iesu wedi mynd â’i ddisgyblion i le o’r enw Cesarea Philipi ac wedi gofyn: ‘Pwy mae pobl yn dweud ydw i?’ Yna gofynnodd Iesu gwestiwn mwy pigog, ‘pwy wyt ti’n dweud fy mod i’. Atebodd Pedr, ‘Y Meseia’. Yna dechreuodd Iesu ddysgu y byddai’r Meseia yn dioddef ac yn marw. Nid oedd hyn yn rhan o’r sgript, roedd Iesu wedi dechrau ail-lunio eu dealltwriaeth o’r Meseia. Mae bod yn ddisgybl yn aml yn ein galw ni i ailfeddwl yn ogystal ag i edifarhau.

As I have said before, it is important to know what has happened before the passage we are reading. Jesus had taken his disciples to a place called Caesarea Philippi and asked: ‘who do people say that I am?’     Jesus then asked a more pointed question, ‘who do you say that I am’. Peter replied, ‘The Messiah’. Jesus then began to teach that the Messiah would suffer and died. This was not part of the script, Jesus had begun to reshape their understandings of the Messiah. Being a disciple often calls us to re-think as well as to repent.

In chapter 9, Jesus had fed the five thousand, and Herod had begun to speculate about Jesus. After, Jesus had begun to challenge his friends to re-think, he went away to pray. Taking with him, Peter, James and John; Jesus is transfigured as he prays.

What happens to Jesus is extraordinary. He is changed before his friends’ eyes. One of Luke’s constant themes is the importance of prayer and how prayer helps create space for God to act. It is through the grace of God that Jesus is changed: his friends see Jesus clearly; he is divine.

Mae Pedr, Iago ac Ioan yn gweld nid yn unig yr Iesu dwyfol, ond bod Moses ac Elias yn siarad ag ef. Peter, James and John see not only the divine Jesus, but that Moses and Elijah are talking to him. Jesus is not talking with them about the meaning of intricate parts of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) but about what Jesus was going to do in Jerusalem. Luke uses the word ‘exodus’. Those hearing would associate Jesus’ death and resurrection with the liberation from Egypt.

Wrth i Moses ac Elias baratoi i adael, mae Pedr yn siarad. Mae Peter yn awgrymu bod tair pabell yn cael eu hadeiladu ar gyfer y tri ffigwr nefol. As Moses and Elijah prepare to leave, Peter speaks. Peter suggests that three tents are built for the three heavenly figures. It is easy to dismiss Peter as being foolish, but to do so misses the point that the fisherman wants to create a place for God to tabernacle (to live). It was a fervent hope within Judaism that God would once again live amongst his people.

Mae llais dwyfol unwaith eto (fe’i clywyd pan fedyddiwyd Iesu). Mae ar gyfer y disgyblion. Iesu yw Mab Duw. Gwrandewch arno fo. Mae hwn yn gyfarwyddyd pwysig wrth iddynt anelu am Jerwsalem a gwylio gydag arswyd wrth i ddigwyddiadau yno ddatblygu.

There is once again a divine voice (it was heard when Jesus was baptised). It is for the disciples. Jesus is God’s Son. Listen to him. This is an important instruction as they head towards Jerusalem and watch with horror as events there unfold.
